The best – and most expensive – model of Mercedes’ stellar W123 model has got to be the 280CE coupe. Built in relatively small numbers between 1977 and 1985, the 280CE offered super silky performance with the fuel injected twin-cam 2.8-litre six-cylinder M110 engine developing 185 bhp which was enough to propel the car to a top speed in excess of 125mph.

This delightful unmolested example comes to us with 63,000 miles on the clock. It’s remarkably sound for a 43 year old car: with the exception of some corrosion to the front lower valance it’s solid all over. The metallic turquoise paintwork (strangely called ‘Petrol’ by the Mercedes marketing boffins) is a little dull in places and suffers from a couple of small scabs but it would polish and touch-up nicely. Brown velour and veneer dominates the cabin. It’s all in good condition with just a patch on the side of the driver’s seat in need of attention.

The car drives as a 280CE should: smooth and direct. It’s a stable, comfortable ride with no untoward noises or smokiness. Electrics all appear in good working order including electric windows that go up and down as they should and a nice toasty heater.

Recently MOT’d (to 17th January 2024) it benefits from a new set of tyres on all corners and is ready to drive away.

This is a good, usable and honest example of one of the most handsome classic Mercs. Can be enjoyed immediately as well as offering scope for long-term improvement. Comes with original owners manual and service records as well as historical MOT papers and tax discs.
